What better subject for the 10th-anniversary RCO London Organ Forum than the organ music of J S Bach, placed in the context of his wider musical life?

Artistic Directors Ann Elise Smoot and William Whithead, together with the London Bach Society, have planned a very special programme of lectures, masterclass, discussion and concert led by world-renowned Bach scholar and performer Professor John Butt (Glasgow University), with Robert Quinney (Sub-Organist, Westminster Abbey), whose first recording in his Bach series has met with much critical acclaim.

The new Richards, Fowkes & Co organ at St George’s Hanover Square, which speaks with a German Baroque accent and which is to be opened in October, features in the day.

The Forum begins at 10:00 and ends at 17:00.

The concert begins at 19:00 and lasts for c. 70 minutes.

Programme:

"Who's in charge?” The multiple roles of the organist in Bach's time

John Butt discusses the various facets of the eighteenth-century church musician: organist, violinist, director of the choir and orchestra. How do these roles converge in the written music?

Specialised Subjects: structure and meaning in Bach's organ fugues

or "How do Bach's fugues make us feel?" Robert Quinney examines the emotional and 'affective' qualities in Bach's organ fugues that are more often dealt with as pieces of 'clever' writing.

Masterclass - John Butt works with organ students from the Royal College of Music

Forum round-up and discussion with John Butt, Robert Quinney, Ann Elise Smoot and William Whitehead

Concert: Hearing Bach's voice: Organ, Chorale and Passion

with voices, instruments and organ and including organ solos and cantatas by J S Bach (full details can be found on the booking form).
