In the first part of this class, Ian Hare will give an illustrated history of the organ voluntary, from its earliest beginnings to the present day. This important and interesting story is not often considered. Other questions Ian will address are: What is the role of the organ in church services today? How does one choose the right music? What part do differing styles of music play in making these choices?
For the second part of the session, bring a short piece you plan to play at church. Ian will offer feedback on your playing, and a discussion of your choice of voluntary.
The Binns organ in Grasmere Parish Church has recently benefitted from an overhaul, details of which can be found here. The reopening concert will be given by James Lancelot on the 30th September. This class continues a celebration of this fine organ.
Grasmere can be reached readily by train and then bus, via Windermere. For those driving, a pay and display car park is near the church. There is also parking at a garden centre close by - this is free IF you make a purchase at that establishment. Those with mobility issues should contact Tom Bell at the RCO, as a disabled parking space is available on church property.
This class is promoted in conjunction with the Cumbrian Society of Organists, and is suitable for players at all levels.
